Morning, neighbors. Pour your coffee, here’s a quick catch-up on Lake Norman of Catawba before the day gets going.
What’s New
We put out a call this week for help getting our Farms & Makers list right; if you know a farm or maker we’re missing, that’s your invite. And with school back in session, we posted a quick reminder to watch for buses on your morning drive.
Did You Know
Sherrills Ford is named for an actual ford, a spot where the Catawba River was shallow enough to cross on foot or by wagon. Adam and Elizabeth Sherrill settled near it in 1747, and their family grew into one of the area’s founding lineages. When Duke Power dammed the river in the 1960s to create Lake Norman, that ford disappeared underwater for good. The name stuck around even though the thing it’s named for is sitting at the bottom of the lake. More on that story, plus how Terrell got its name, is on our History & Heritage page.
Quote for the Road
“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” Heraclitus said that a couple thousand years before anyone here had heard of a dam, but it fits the Sherrills Ford story pretty well.
That’s the coffee-break version. Got a tip, a correction, or something we should know about? Send it our way, or pass this along to a neighbor. This whole thing only works with everyone’s help.
