Local Spots
A working list of real places on the Catawba County side of the lake, not a ranking, not a review, just what’s actually here. Know a place we’re missing? Let us know.
On the Water
- Lake Norman Marina, NC-150, Sherrills Ford
- Boat Rack Marina, Spinnaker Bay Dr, Sherrills Ford
- Mountain Creek Marina, Walker Rd, Sherrills Ford
Boat Ramps
- Long Island Access Area, Long Island Rd, Catawba. Free, 24-hour public ramp maintained by NC Wildlife, with canoe/kayak access and ADA-accessible floating docks.
- Lake Norman Marina Slipway, 7050 Worth St, Sherrills Ford. ADA-compliant public ramp at the marina.
- Mountain Creek Park, 6554 Little Mountain Rd, Sherrills Ford. Kayak and canoe launch, plus a fishing pier, no ramp for motorized trailers.
Swimming
Straight answer: there’s no official public swim beach on this side of the lake right now. That’s worth knowing on its own, not just a gap to skip past.
- Lake Norman State Park has the lake’s one official swim beach and bathhouse, but it’s across the lake in Troutman, Iredell County, not a quick trip from Sherrills Ford.
Worth watching: Duke Energy has set aside 130 acres in Catawba County for a future public access site called Island Point, which is planned to include a swim beach, boat ramp, fishing piers, and trails. It’s part of a legal commitment tied to Duke’s 2015 federal relicensing and still years out. We’ll cover it properly on Development Watch as it moves.
Parks & Outdoors
- Mountain Creek Park, Catawba County’s flagship park and the only county park directly on this stretch of shoreline: playgrounds, hiking loops, a kayak launch, a fishing pier, and mountain-bike trails. Catawba County’s other three parks, Bakers Mountain, Riverbend, and St. Stephens, are elsewhere in the county, not on the lake.
Food & Drink
- Lineberger’s Steakhouse, a Sherrills Ford institution, open since 1971
- The Landing Restaurant & Tiki Bar, waterfront dining right on the lake
- Boss Hogg’s BBQ, now running as a food truck rather than a storefront
- Butcher Boy Café
Community
- Sherrills Ford-Terrell Public Library, books, computers, and meeting space for the community
This list will keep growing as we confirm more spots, treat it as a starting point, not the whole picture yet.
A few longtime places aren’t around anymore, Midway Marina among them, but they were part of this community for a long time and deserve more than getting quietly dropped from a list. We’re planning to cover that history properly rather than just erasing it. If you remember a place like that, tell us about it.
