Most of what happens at a county commissioners meeting is countywide. But the Catawba County Board of Commissioners’ September 21 meeting had a couple of items that land right here in Lake Norman of Catawba. Here’s the short version.
Sewer lift station upgrades
The county runs a series of sewer lift stations along Sherrills Ford Road, Molly’s Backbone Road, and Brown Chapel Road. They carry wastewater to the Hickory-Catawba Wastewater Treatment Plant in the town of Catawba. According to the county, staff are currently upgrading three of them: the one at Sherrills Ford Elementary School, the one on Molly’s Backbone Road, and the one on Brown Chapel Road.
The Molly’s Backbone Road station needs a little more room for the improvements, so commissioners approved buying a small strip of land next to it, about 20 feet by 132 feet (0.061 acres), for $1,000. That strip gets combined with the existing lift station property.
The county’s recap didn’t include a construction timeline or mention any service disruptions. If we hear more, we’ll pass it along.
Rezoning on E. NC 150 Highway
After a public hearing, commissioners approved rezoning two parcels totaling 2.54 acres at 5785 E. NC 150 Highway from R-20 Residential to Highway Commercial (HC). The recap didn’t say what, if anything, is planned for the site.
Also approved, countywide
- The 2026-2036 Parks Master Plan, presented by Parks Director David Wagg.
- A construction bid of up to $1,525,800 to DDI of Hickory for the Catawba County Livestock Education Facility.
