Morning, neighbors. Slow week for site news, so let’s use today’s cup for something practical before hunting season ramps back up.
Did You Know
Ever hear a shot nearby during hunting season and wonder if you should be worried? Here’s one worth filing away before archery deer season opens statewide on September 12: North Carolina law generally makes it illegal to fire a gun within 300 yards of an occupied home without permission, but that rule doesn’t apply to lawful hunting under state wildlife law, and Catawba County’s own discharge ordinance carries the same exception. So a legal hunter really can be closer to your house than you’d expect, whether you’re out near the water or further back from it. Catawba County’s firearm deer season runs November 21 through January 1 this year. If something feels off, hunting on posted land without permission, or anything that doesn’t add up, you can still report it to NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s enforcement line at 1-800-662-7137, anonymously if you’d rather. Full rundown, plus who to call for everything from trash pickup to a downed power line, is on our County Services: Who to Call page.
Quote for the Road
Conservationist Aldo Leopold put it simply: “There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot.” Out here, most of us fall in that second group whether we hunt or not.
That’s this morning’s cup. Got a correction, a question, or something we should know about? Send it our way, we only get this right with your help.
