Morning, neighbors. Coffee’s hot, and today’s cup has some real news in it, plus a little history for the road.

What’s New

We just put up a real Upcoming Events page, one we keep confirmed and current so you’re not stuck relying on flyers or Facebook. Today it includes the Unified Development Ordinance open house at the county Government Center in Newton (10 AM to 8 PM, drop in any time) and the 42nd Annual Harvest Folk Festival at Murray’s Mill (September 26-27). Bookmark it, we’ll keep adding to it as things get confirmed.

Did You Know

Did you know Balls Creek Campground, near Maiden, split off from Rock Springs Camp Meeting back in 1853, after Catawba and Lincoln counties divided? 2026 marks its 173rd year. Like Rock Springs, the “tents” at Balls Creek aren’t tents at all, they’re simple wooden family structures passed down for generations, some older than most buildings still standing around here. More on that on our History & Heritage page.

Quote for the Road: There’s an old saying that we don’t inherit the land from our parents, we borrow it from our children. The families still gathering at Balls Creek every August, generation after generation, seem to have landed on their own version of that same idea.

That’s this morning’s cup. Got a correction, a tip, or an event we should add to the list? Send it our way, that’s what keeps this whole thing honest.

Correction, September 24: an earlier version of this post listed a Goodwill job fair at the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library on October 1. That listing came from a 2024 county post that we didn’t check closely enough, and it isn’t happening this year. That’s on us, and we’ve removed it.
