Last school year, kids in Catawba County public schools made more than 26,000 visits to the nurse’s office. Of those, 93% went back to class afterward.

Those numbers come from Catawba County Public Health’s School Health Program, the subject of the county’s latest “Catawba County 101” feature. If you have a student at Sherrills Ford Elementary, Mill Creek Middle, Bandys High or any other public school in the county, this is the team behind the nurse’s office.

The basics

  • 29 School Health Nurses serve 44 school locations.
  • They work in every elementary, middle and high school in all three county school systems.
  • Each school has a nurse’s office students and staff can visit.
  • The program is a partnership between Catawba County Government, Catawba Valley Medical Center and the three school systems.

What school nurses do

According to the county, school nurses help students who need ongoing care during the school day, keep track of immunization records, teach students and staff about health topics, and connect families with local health resources, including help finding a regular doctor.

They also lead emergency response teams in their schools, training staff so someone is ready to step in if an emergency happens on campus.
