Registration books close this Friday, October 9. If you have moved, changed your name, or aren’t sure your voter record is current, check it before then. The general election is Tuesday, November 3, and early voting starts next week right here at the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library.
This post is just the logistics: dates, places, and what to bring. All of it comes from the Catawba County Board of Elections.
Key dates
- Friday, October 9: Last day to register or update your voter record for this election.
- Thursday, October 15: Early voting begins at 8am.
- Tuesday, October 20: Last day to request a mail-in ballot (5pm).
- Saturday, October 31: Last day of early voting (closes 3pm).

Early voting close to home
The Sherrills Ford-Terrell Library, 9154 Sherrills Ford Road, Terrell, is one of five early voting sites in Catawba County. During early voting you can vote at any open site in the county, not just the closest one. Hours are weekdays 8am to 7:30pm, Saturdays 8am to 3pm, and Sundays 1pm to 5pm.
The other four sites are the Newton Main Library, Highland Recreation Center in Hickory, Southwest Library in Hickory, and Conover Station.
Missed the registration deadline?
If you are eligible but not registered by October 9, you can still register and vote at the same time, but only at an early voting site. You will need a valid photo ID and proof of where you live. A photo ID showing your current address works. Otherwise, bring something like a current utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck with your name and address. You cannot register on Election Day.
Election Day is different
On November 3 you have to vote at your assigned polling place, based on your home address. You can look yours up with the State Board of Elections voter lookup tool. That same tool shows your own sample ballot. The county notes there is no single generic ballot, because what you see depends on your address.
What to bring
Photo ID is required to vote in person and by mail. The county lists the accepted types and the free voter photo ID options on its elections page. If you need help getting into the building, curbside voting is available for voters who can’t go inside because of age or physical disability.
Voting by mail
You can request a mail-in ballot through the state’s online absentee portal until 5pm on October 20. Your completed ballot has to be physically at the Board of Elections office by 7:30pm on Election Day to count.
Where to check
Dates and rules can change, so confirm with the source before you head out. The Catawba County Board of Elections has the full details and can be reached at 828-464-2424. Check your registration and find your sample ballot and polling place at the State Board of Elections voter lookup. The county’s early voting page lists all five sites.
