Morning, neighbors. Coffee’s on, and there’s one real update worth putting on your radar before the week gets away from you.

What’s New

Catawba County is in the middle of rewriting its Unified Development Ordinance, the rulebook covering zoning, subdivisions, and floodplain rules for the unincorporated parts of the county, including Sherrills Ford, Terrell, Monbo, and Long Island. If you own property or are thinking about building anything out here, it’s worth knowing about.

The county is holding an informal drop-in session on Tuesday, September 22, where you can look over the proposed changes and ask planning staff questions directly. It’s not a formal hearing, just a chance to see what’s changing before it moves to the Planning Board and the Board of Commissioners. Full details are in our write-up on the zoning update.

Did You Know

If you’ve ever wondered why your neighbor’s power bill looks different from yours, here’s why: this area doesn’t have just one electric provider. Depending on exactly where your address sits, you’re served by either Duke Energy or EnergyUnited, a member-owned electric cooperative based in Statesville. Coverage can change block by block out here, so if you’re not sure which one serves you, checking a recent bill or asking a neighbor is the easiest way to find out.

More on who to call for this and other everyday county questions is on our County Services: Who to Call page.

That’s this morning’s pour. Got a tip, a correction, or something worth sharing? Send it our way, this only works because neighbors help build it.
