Morning, neighbors. Quiet one on the news front today, so let’s slow down with a little real history instead.

Did You Know

Sherrills Ford didn’t start as a town, it started as a river crossing. Adam and Elizabeth Sherrill arrived from Maryland and settled near that crossing point on the Catawba River back in 1747. Their family, one daughter and eight sons, grew into one of the founding lineages of this whole area, and plenty of Sherrill descendants still live here today. The actual ford itself, the shallow spot where people and wagons once crossed the river, disappeared underwater when Duke Power dammed the Catawba in the 1960s and created Lake Norman. The name stuck around long after the crossing it described went under. More of the area’s founding families and stories are on our History & Heritage page.

Quote for the Road

A “ford,” in the old sense, just means a shallow spot where you can cross a river on foot or by wagon. Worth remembering next time you drive over the bridge instead.
