The North Carolina State Board of Education has approved a review timeline for the proposed merger of Catawba County Schools, Hickory City Schools, and Newton-Conover City Schools. It’s a story worth following for anyone with kids in the local schools that make up our area’s feeder pattern: Sherrills Ford Elementary, Mill Creek Middle, and Bandys High are all part of Catawba County Schools, one of the three systems on the table.
What’s happening
The merger would combine the three separate school systems into a single consolidated district, tentatively called the Catawba Valley School District. Hickory Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Griffin and Newton-Conover Superintendent Dr. Emily Shaw confirmed the newly approved timeline for the State Board’s review.
The timeline
- October 5: the three school systems may submit briefs and supporting materials
- October 26: the Catawba County Board of Commissioners’ deadline to file a reply
- November 4-5: the proposal returns to the State Board as a discussion item
- December 2-3: a hearing where each party can present information and answer board questions
After the hearing, the State Board is expected to deliberate and eventually vote. The merger has not received state approval yet. If it is approved, the county’s plan calls for the consolidated district to begin operating July 1, 2028.
Why it matters here
This is a countywide story, not one specific to Sherrills Ford or Terrell, but it’s directly relevant to local families since Catawba County Schools is the district serving our area’s kids. We’ll keep an eye on the review process and post updates as the timeline moves forward, especially around the November discussion and December hearing dates.
