Wait, Since When Do We Call It That?

You might be noticing, like the rest of us who’ve lived here a long time, that a name we never really said out loud, “Lake Norman of Catawba,” is suddenly showing up everywhere. Here’s the walkthrough. It’s not new, and it’s not a rebrand.

The U.S. Census Bureau has called this stretch of shoreline, Sherrills Ford, Terrell, Monbo, and Long Island, “Lake Norman of Catawba” since 2010. Most of us never saw that name because nobody was using it out loud. We still call it Sherrills Ford, or Terrell, or just “the northwest side of the lake.” That’s not changing.

What is changing: we started registering under that official name for this site and everywhere else you’ll start seeing us show up. Not because the town names are going away. They’re not. It’s because the census name is the one that actually covers everybody: the two towns most people already know, plus Monbo and Long Island, which don’t always get mentioned.

So if you’ve lived here your whole life and just thought, “wait, since when do we call it that?”, now you know. Same place, same people, just a name that finally includes everybody who’s actually from here.

What’s Here Right Now

• History & Heritage: the Sherrill family, Terrell’s country store, and the camp meeting tradition that’s older than the lake itself.
• Local Spots: real places on the water, in the parks, and at the table. No filler, no invented “hidden gems.”

• Local news: as real things happen around the shoreline, we’re covering them.

Coming soon: a directory of local farms, makers, and small producers across the wider area, because supporting this place means supporting the people who actually work it.

Why We’re Proud of It

This is a small, independent project, built by someone who grew up here. Not a real estate team running a lead funnel, not a content mill. Longtime families who’ve been here for generations and neighbors who just arrived both get the same thing from us: information that’s checked, not fabricated.

And that includes all four communities in the name, not just the two you’ve probably heard of. Monbo and Long Island are part of this too, and if you’re from either one and have a story, a place, or a piece of history we should know about, we especially want to hear it.
